EdTech MVP Development for Learning Apps and Course Platforms

An EdTech MVP tests whether learners will come back to your content. A first version needs three things: a way to deliver content, progress tracking, and a simple assessment such as a quiz. Everything else can wait. SkillBytes proved its idea with a WhatsApp MVP that delivered bite-sized lessons; we then took over the engineering and re-architected it for 1.1M+ registered users and 100K+ monthly active users.

What to build first

What a first learning product needs

Leaderboards, badges, certificates, multiple languages, and detailed analytics can wait until learners show they come back.

  • ✓Content delivery: lessons, videos, or bite-sized messages
  • ✓Progress tracking, so learners and you can see where they are
  • ✓Assessments, such as quizzes after a lesson
  • ✓Sign-in, so progress is saved
Channel

Web app, mobile app, or messaging?

Start where your learners already are. SkillBytes started on WhatsApp, which meant learners did not have to install anything. A web app is the fastest to launch and update. A mobile app adds store review time, so we do not promise its store launch inside 2 weeks, and building for several channels adds to the cost.

Course platforms

Course and LMS platforms for schools and creators

If you sell or run courses rather than build a learner app, the first version usually needs course and content management, enrolment, progress tracking, payments if you charge for courses, and an admin role. Certificates and detailed reporting can usually wait until after launch.

Scope

What fits in 2 weeks

One learning loop fits: content, progress, and a quiz for one audience. Adaptive learning paths, AI-generated content pipelines, and scaling to very large audiences are later stages; SkillBytes added those after its first version had proven demand.

Scope

What an EdTech MVP includes

The learning loop, and what learners need to reach it.

✓Content delivery on one channel
✓Progress tracking
✓Quizzes or simple assessments
✓Sign-in and learner accounts
✓An admin view to add content
✓Basic error monitoring and 30 days of launch fixes

Process

The 2-week EdTech MVP process

The standard 14-day process, applied to one learning loop.

  1. 01

    Day 1

    Agree the scope

Your one to three decision makers sit with our product manager or lead developer. We decide which part of the product will test your idea and write down what waits for later.

  2. 02

    Days 2–3

    Design the journey

We study your top two or three competitors, agree the pages and screens, finalise the user journey, and use AI to create a demo from your brand guidelines.

  3. 03

    Days 4–9

    Build the working MVP

Our developer builds the core features, sign-in, database, and the other parts the product needs, using AI coding tools such as Claude, Cursor, and Codex.

  4. 04

    Day 10

    Deploy

We put the product on a server so people can use it online. A simple MVP does not need a CDN, queues, or microservices.

  5. 05

    Days 11–14

    Test, fix, and launch

AI writes the unit tests; people test the full user journey and we watch the backend. One or two rounds of changes, then launch and handover.

SkillBytes: from a WhatsApp MVP to 1.1M+ learners

SkillBytes proved its idea with an MVP that delivered bite-sized lessons on WhatsApp. As learners arrived, the original script began timing out during peak study hours.

We took over the engineering and rebuilt the backend so incoming WhatsApp messages are queued and acknowledged immediately, added Redis caching for active learner sessions, and set up a deployment pipeline. We also used learner drop-off data to improve onboarding.

The platform now serves 1.1M+ registered users and 100K+ monthly active users. The lesson for an EdTech MVP: prove learners come back first, then invest in scale.
